Praying for Your Husband from Head to Toe

Do you pray for your husband every day? Do you need some guidance on how to pray for your spouse?

Two years ago, I attended a women’s conference in a Christian church in Virginia. The speaker was Sharon Jaynes, a best-selling Christian author and co-founder of Girlfriends in God. I was so blessed by her message that I bought her book “Praying For Your Husband From Head To Toe”. It is a 30-day prayer guide that gives powerful Bible Verses along with corresponding prayers to “target the most important areas of your man’s life”.

For Sharon Jaynes, these are the landmarks of prayer for your husband :

  1. Mind: What he thinks about
  2. Eyes: What he looks at
  3. Ears: What he listens to
  4. Mouth: The words he speaks
  5. Neck: The decisions that turn his head
  6. Shoulders: His burdens and worries
  7. Heart: Who or what he loves
  8. Back: His protection
  9. Arms: His strength
  10. Hands: His work
  11. Ring Finger: His marriage
  12. Side: His relationships
  13. Sexuality: His need for physical intimacy
  14. Legs: His stand on the Truth
  15. Knees: His relationship with God
  16. Feet: His walk

Why Should We Pray For Our Husbands?

Daily prayer for our families is essential for a fulfilling and favored life in God. I try my best to pray for my husband every day. I think that one of the most important roles in my life is being a prayer warrior. I am telling you, there is power in a woman’s prayer!

A Bit of A Backstory

I used to live and work in the United States with my husband and baby boy. My husband and I both worked as professionals and served in our church as children’s ministers. I thought that I had it all figured out. For me, I was living my best life and nothing else could go wrong…

Until it did.

Our long-term plan of staying in the United States did not work out. I will spare you the details, but it had to do with trusting the wrong people. We were doing things the legal way, but it did not work out in time. Both my husband and I thought it was best to go back to the Philippines and wait it out there instead of staying in the U.S. illegally. Honestly, we were not that desperate.

So we sold our cars and maybe a quarter of our possessions and gave away most of our baby stuff. We went home to the Philippines with a heavy heart and started from scratch.

This major transition took a toll on my marriage and our personal lives. When we returned to the Philippines, my husband went back to his old habit of smoking. It really affected me because I personally dislike smoking for health reasons. My oldest son has asthma and allergies and should not be exposed to pollution.

Then, I got pregnant with my second child even before my first son turned one! I have to admit that we were not “ready” to have another child because Leon was only ten months old at that time. My body has barely recovered from my previous pregnancy.

Dealing With Disappointment

I stopped praying for a time because I was so depressed, disappointed and angry. I was not very kind to my husband, and instead of supporting him, I just nagged him and reminded him of the many ways he was doing things wrong. As a result, we did not relate to one another in kindness and love, and we fought almost every day. My marriage was failing and we were unhappy.

Going Back to God

I think God gave me a wake-up call when He reminded me of His purpose in our lives. He is the author of marriage and He is the God of love. He showed me that I was too busy complaining and sulking that I did not appreciate God’s blessings. For one thing, if we did not go back to the Philippines, we would not have a Lucas! Also, going home allowed my parents to spend more time with their grandchildren. Nothing is more precious than seeing your own parents bonding with your children!

I realized that I needed to go back to God if I want to live my best life. He reminded me that He has many blessings that are waiting to be claimed! I committed to having the right attitude and mindset from then on. And it started with devoting myself to daily prayer.

Praying For Your Husband

Powerful and Effective Prayer

Sharon Jaynes outlined what powerful and effective prayer looks like. I personally find this very helpful because sometimes I do not know what to pray for exactly. In this thirty-day prayer guide, you can read Scriptures for each day along with corresponding prayers to target the crucial area of your husband’s life. It equipped and empowered me to establish the habit of purposeful prayer. I recommend this book to all prayerful wives who want to claim the blessings God has in store for your family!

Examples of Prayers That Worked For Us

My Husband’s Hands:

Scripture: “When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant.” Genesis 39:4

Lord, I pray that my husband’s coworkers will see that You are with him and that You gave him success. May he find favor in his field of employment and recognize that favor as Your blessing on his life and in his work.

The Results:

God blessed my husband with a very good job in the Philippines and he was even promoted to a leadership position. Furthermore, in time, the Lord Jesus blessed him with a job in Italy as a safety physician!

My Husband’s Ring Finger:

Scripture: “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139: 23-24

Heavenly Father, it is so easy to allow bitterness, resentment, and anger to creep into marriage. Please search my heart and my husband’s heart. Show us anything that is potentially destructive or detrimental to our marriage. Help us root out any harmful patterns and behaviors we’ve developed over time, and lead us in the way of a God-honoring and God-centered marriage.

The Result:

Over the past year, we have learned to love one another better- which includes showing love, respect, and importance to one another. Instead of sulking or keeping things to ourselves, we learned to “fight right” and to be more honest with one another. Honestly, I feel like our marriage is stronger and better now that we are praying together and putting God first. Our relationship is not at all perfect but we are bonded together by our perfect Father.

My Husband’s Back:

Scripture: Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? Job 1:10

Almighty Lord, place a hedge of protection around my husband, our household, and everything we have. Surround my husband on all sides with Your protective presence. Preserve his going out and his coming in. Keep him under your watchful eye and tender care.

The Result:

For nine months now, we have managed without a car. In Italy, documents take more time to be processed, so we are still waiting for the approval of my husband’s driver’s license. God continues to protect him on his daily commute ( despite the lack of sidewalks and the fast-moving cars). On a more positive note, my husband became fitter and healthier because he was walking outdoors everyday. Living without a car also helped us live more simply and save money. This prayer helped me remove any nagging fear for my husband’s safety as he travels to and from work.

My Final Thoughts

  1. This is not a “magic book” that will help you get your wishes and desires nor is it designed to manipulate your husband. Rather, it is an organized guide to help you pray for every aspect of your husband’s life. When you pray, you acknowledge that God is sovereign and that He will lead your family in the right direction. Oswald Chamber’s says that prayer is not a matter of changing things externally, but one of working miracles in a person’s inner nature.
  2. Before, I thought it was not fair that wives should be praying for their husbands. Shouldn’t husbands be praying for their wives as well? Why isn’t there a book about husbands praying for their wives? (Well, actually I found a blog post on 9 Prayers To Pray Over Your Wife) This is not a “battle of the sexes” kind of thing; rather, it emphasizes the power of a praying woman! When a woman of faith prays, it opens the floodgates of heaven and pours blessings upon her family.
  3. Daily prayer is a daily submission to God. It helps me start my day right and gives me the right attitude towards my husband and my children. I need to stay consistent and this book is a great supplement to the Bible.

Do you believe in the power of prayer? How does prayer help you live your best life?
