A Woman Who ‘Breaks Glass Ceilings’

Inspirational Women

Rina Benedictos lives in Australia with her husband and daughter. She is a dramatic soprano, character actor, host and TV presenter.  Moreover, she has spent the last ten years as a facilitator, mentor, and coach. She is also the creator of the “The Cinderella Challenge”. The challenge is to recognize women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.

Rina’s Story

Rina worked as a teacher at the University of the Philippines. She earned a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology. Later on, she became involved in programs on social and economic empowerment. These programs helped women break the cycle of harassment and violence. 

Shining Light on Shadows

“2018 marks my 20th year as a Philippine-born educator. I was committed to shining light on shadows. In my home country, the biggest shadow is poverty. Teachers were bearers of the key to knowledge and education. Education is the solution to poverty.”

Breaking Through Glass Ceilings

“Also, I grew up in a patriarchal Filipino society. Gender stereotypes prevailed. Gender role divisions reigned. Furthermore, there were gender inequalities. Gender inequality exists in education, employment, and entrepreneurship. Gender-based harassment and violence were evil shadows. We cast light on these shadows. We ‘broke the glass ceiling’ through education, prevention, and elimination.”

Breaking Through The ‘Bamboo Ceiling’

“2018 marks the milestone for me as an Australian. I am a migrant woman of Asian background. This time, I need to ‘break through the bamboo ceiling’. I face the three-dimensional issues of sexism, classism, and racism. They are a barrier to my social and economic goals.

Multicultural women are underrepresented in leadership positions. They are migrant women from Asian and other non-European backgrounds. Migrant women are at a double disadvantage. This is compared to migrant men and native-born women.

Leadership in Australia is gender-based. Australia is limited without diverse leaders. As a result, we are not making the most out of our multiculturalism. We need to harness the rich and diverse talent in our society. If we do this, then we are not missing out.

I am passionate about developing multicultural women. I do this by honing their leadership skills. Moreover, I encourage cultural change. Most of all, we want to have organisational and management practices that value diversity.”
