5 Steps To Take Care Of Your Skin

What’s The Skinny on Skin Care?

This article shares 5 Skincare Steps to have healthy and beautiful skin, as recommended by a dermatologist. Keep reading to know how to take care of your baby’s skin as well as acne-prone skin. I was able to get in touch with Dr. Cricelda Rescober- Valencia, a dermatologist certified by The Philippine Dermatological Society, and she agreed to share a few tips on skin care. Again, it is best to consult a dermatologist in person! This post has useful information for how to take care of skin in general.

Dr. Cricelda Rescober-Valencia has been in private practice for more than five years and has pursued further studies in dermatologic laser in Thailand a few years ago.

Tell us about your interests.

I have always been fascinated by the study of skin, with it being the largest organ of the body. My other interests include dancing (especially hip-hop), dogs, and food!

Tell us about your family.

My husband, Nikko, is an ophthalmologist with focus on vitreo-retina surgery and refractive surgery. We have only been married for a month when we were blessed with a son, Nathan, who is now 5 months old.

What are you like as a mom?

Since I am a first-time mom, I am learning day by day. It was difficult at first with the endless diaper changing, sleepless nights and scratching my head trying to decode what my baby’s cries meant. But being hands-on with Nathan made us closer, bringing me immense joy I did not think was possible.

Can you share some tips on how to take care of our babies’ skin?

tips for taking care of baby's skin

The baby’s skin is thinner and more sensitive than our skin. Because of the great surface area-body mass ratio in infants, they are at an increased risk for systemic toxicity from topically applied drugs. That is why it’s best to consult your dermatologist when it comes to treating your baby’s skin woes. Bathing with plain lukewarm water for a short time (around 5-10 mins) followed by application of an unscented simple emollient or lotion is advised to keep their skin healthy. Sometimes, well-meaning parents bathe their babies frequently which may increase the risk of eczema. Always remember that dry skin always itches.

How can we take care of acne-prone skin?

For acne-prone skin, it is best to consult your friendly dermatologist so he or she can recommend a regimen for you. Overcleansing or using harsh alkaline soaps will likely increase your skin’s pH, disrupting its protective barrier, making it more prone to inflammation. Twice a day cleansing is enough. Also, acne is not always due to stress or puberty. It may also be because of an underlying endocrinologic disorder, drug intake or even your occupation.

How To Take Care of Skin

Can you share a skin care routine that you recommend to your patients?

skin care tips for moms

To keep your skin healthy, cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and protect.

    1. Wash your face with a ph-balanced cleanser twice a day.
    2. Never go to sleep with your make up on. Always remove your makeup!
    3. Exfoliate with a mechanical (beads, scrubs) or chemical exfoliator twice a week to remove dead skin cells and unclog your pores.
    4. Apply a non-comedogenic moisturizer, more so at night.
    5. Lastly, put on a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 and more at least 15 minutes before you head outdoors to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Get one that says broad spectrum so you have ammunition against UVA and UVB. Aging is mostly because of the sun so start to delay the development of wrinkles as early as you can. For skin, hair or nail concerns, consult with a dermatologist that is board-certified by the Philippine Dermatological Society.

April Skin Magic Stone Review

What Is April Skin Magic Stone?

First of all, I’d like to share with you my quest to write reviews on products that I have already used up. It gives me so much joy to completely use up a product! My “January Empty (2018)” is the April Skin Magic Stone, a Korean-made soap that claims to be non-irritating, eco-friendly, and applicable for all skin types.

April Skin Magic Stone Soap

Where Can You Buy April Skin Magic Stone?

I bought this soap at Watson’s Philippines five months ago but I was only able to use it last month. They were having a Korean products sale at that time and I was very intrigued by the name of the soap. As a nursing mom, I was also looking for safer and unscented beauty products. (You can also purchase this soap from Amazon. Check out my affiliate link at the end of this post.)

So I used it almost every day since December 2017, so it would be safe to say that this soap lasted for a little more than a month. I used it as a face and body soap.

My thoughts on April Skin Magic Stone:

1. First, let’s talk about its scent. I really like products that have a mild/ non-existent smell. It has a very neutral smell which I like because it does not mix with the other scents that I put on my body (e.g. lotion/ perfume).

2. Next, it gives my skin a squeaky-clean feeling, but it is non-drying as well.

3. Furthermore, it melts easily so keep it in a dry container. The directions also say to cut it into 4 pieces to save more of the product.

4. However, it is very expensive for a piece of soap (Php 400)! I might not repurchase it because of its price. If I go to Korea, I will definitely repurchase. This is available on Amazon U.K.

April Skin Magic Stone Black’s Ingredients:

Finally, here are the ingredients found on the label. Read carefully! Coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, castor oil, camellia oil, rice bran oil, shea butter, pure water, sodium hydroxide, liquid sulfur, kelp extract, pearl powder, charcoal powder, hyaluronic acid, muscovite powder, luquid effective microorganisms, oriental medicine complex, lavender E.O, Lemon E.O

I hope you found this review helpful!

A Busy Mom’s Guide To Makeup and Skin Care

Makeup and Skin Care Tips

Are you a busy mom who needs advice on makeup and skincare? Do you want to commit to a simple makeup and skincare routine that actually work?

Today, Professional Makeup Artist Anna Vanessa Carvajal- Lo will share some makeup and skin care tips for busy women. She will also tell us her recommended makeup products that she uses on herself and on her clients! The products she uses are high quality and quite expensive, but if you have a budget for yourself, then I think it’s okay to treat yourself!

Self-care and mental health

We spend so much time taking care of the needs of our family that we sometimes forget to take care of ourselves. Self-care and mental health are very important, but they are often neglected because of our daily responsibilities. Even a little makeup can go a long way!

Let’s get to know our mommy makeup artist.

How would you describe yourself as a mom?

I try to be hands-on as much as possible. I try my best to do everything right. Perhaps I fail most of the time. But at the end of the day, I rest in the grace of God that sustains me and my family.

Can you tell us a little bit about your family?

My husband is very kind and supportive, and very busy. He works as a journalist and most of the time he’s working. So I try to manage my schedule and run the household. We have a 5-year-old daughter. She is relatively a good kid, polite, smart and very funny even without trying. We are expecting another baby girl in three weeks!

What’s your daily schedule like?

Usually, I take my daughter to school and fetch her from school. Then I schedule my work around that. But on days when I cannot schedule my work within my daughter’s school schedule, it’s either my husband, my brother, my father or mother-in-law who picks my daughter up from school or the nanny and the driver.

What skill have you mastered lately?

Managing the household, I think.

When you’re not in “mommy mode”, what do you do for fun?

My husband and I like to watch movies. I also like to spend time with my parents and my brother if their schedule allows it. I like going to karaoke with my friends too.

Can you tell us about your work?

I am a free-lance professional makeup artist in Manila so I am usually booked ahead of time. I do makeup for weddings, events, and photo shoots. My job is my passion! I see beauty unfolding right before my eyes. It keeps me in a sense of wonder and amazement. I love it when I make my clients more beautiful and if they are happy with my work, it makes me happy too. I consider myself very lucky because not every makeup artist is given this opportunity. But of course, it was very difficult when I started out. So I’m so thankful. I think I never want to retire.
