Today’s flower is the Hibiscus, also known as Ibisco in Italian and Gumamela in Filipino. This type of flower is very common in the tropical islands of the Philippines, where I grew up.
When I was a little girl, I remember plucking a Gumamela and placing it behind my ear. I also remember grinding the petals and leaves using a mortar and pestle and mixing it with water to make a bubble solution.
This photo was taken in Orto Botanico dell’Universita di Siena in Tuscany, Italy. My little boys and I were taking a nature walk that day, and this flower caught my eye because it reminded me of my childhood.
